The new Mississauga Hospital is expected to be nearly three times the size of the current healthcare facility, and construction on the site is expected to begin as early as next year.
When completed, the new healthcare centre is expected to be among the largest–if not the largest–hospitals in Canada, according to the Ontario government, which at the beginning of December unveiled preliminary plans for the huge project.
While construction of the 22-storey state-of-the-art hospital isn’t anticipated to begin until 2025, work to demolish the existing parking garage at the Hurontario St./Queensway site and begin erecting a new eight-storey parking structure could begin in 2022.
The new parking garage, to be built on the south end of the site on land currently used for surface parking, will have space for 1,462 vehicles, according to the development application.
The new hospital structure will boast about 2.8 million sq. ft. of space and 23 cutting-edge operating rooms, up from the 14 older ORs currently in use.
Additionally, the emergency department will be one of the largest in Ontario and some 350 new beds will be added to bring the total to more than 950. More than 80 per cent of the beds will be in private rooms.
Once the new hospital is complete, the existing structure will be demolished.
As project architect, Canadian-based Stantec is providing planning, design and conformance services for the new Mississauga Hospital.
Trillium Health Partners (THP), which oversees Mississauga and Credit Valley hospitals in Mississauga and Queensway Health Centre in Toronto, is also planning massive upgrades to the Toronto facility.
Queensway Health Centre, located on Mississauga’s eastern border with Toronto, will be the site of a new nine-storey, 600,000 sq. ft. patient tower housing 350 beds.
Stantec has designed several healthcare facilities in Ontario in recent years, including a new 1.2 million sq. ft. facility in Vaughan, Cambridge Memorial Hospital’s new patient care wing and a redevelopment project at Brockville General Hospital.
