Brampton is celebrating International Women’s Day with a big event this year.

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on March 8. The day has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911.

In Brampton, the celebration will be on Saturday, March 9 and include influential speakers, a women-owned vendor marketplace and a concert.

The event celebrates the achievements and contributions of women and individuals who identify as women who, throughout history, have done so much to make Brampton the livable, compassionate and prosperous city it is today, according to a press release from the City of Brampton.

“I am so proud to celebrate the incredible women in Brampton,” said Councillor Rowena Santos. “I am surrounded by strong, successful and inspiring women both personally and professionally and I am thankful for their contributions and lessons.”

Santos is slated to host the International Women’s Day fireside chat, alongside Councillor Navjit Kaur Brar.

Brar is the first turban-wearing Sikh woman elected to office in Canada.

“On International Women’s Day, as a community, let’s take a moment to recognize the pivotal role women play in shaping communities and driving progress worldwide,” said Brar. “This year’s theme is ‘Inspire Inclusion’ and we are thrilled that the City of Brampton IWD event will celebrate the achievements of women from diverse backgrounds.”

The fireside chat will include influential women leaders in arts, business, health and public service.

Dr. Manisha Pahwa Ph.D., Canadian film director Kelly Fyffe-Marshall, Chief of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation Claire Sault, Peel Region Commissioner of Health Services Nancy Polsinelli and CEO of Gray Matter Health Marci Gray are joining the chat.

The vendor marketplace will include women-owned businesses and Brampton-based women’s advocacy and empowerment groups.

And there will be complimentary refreshments from local women-run Brampton business, Nourish & Fulfill.

The event is free and runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Rose, 1 Theatre Lane, Brampton.

Grammy-nominated Irish American supergroup Cherish the Ladies rounds out the evening with a concert at 8 p.m. Purchase tickets here.
