Home renovation scam in Mississauga and Brampton leads to arrest

A Norval, Ont. man is facing fraud charges in connection with an alleged renovation scam in which police say at least five homeowners in Mississauga and Brampton lost their money after hiring a contractor to do work that was never done.
Fraud investigators with Peel Regional Police allege that a person identifying themselves as “Sunny,” of Weaver Home Improvement and North Side Renovations, signed five renovation contracts and collected deposits totaling $37,000 between September 2021 and February 2023.
Police say that in every instance, the man “promised to provide a service, signed a contract, collected a deposit and failed to provide said service or return the deposit.”
Hardish Khinda, 42, of Norval, was arrested last Nov. 23 and charged with defrauding the public. He appeared in Brampton court on Dec. 18.
Investigators believe there are more victims and they’re being encouraged to contact police.

Police remind the public to be meticulous in vetting contractors by asking for personal referrals, checking online reviews and verifying their credentials.
