Home invasions jump 350% this year as police lay over 150 charges against crime network in Mississauga and Brampton

Over a dozen alleged carjackers, home invaders and robbers linked to an organized crime group operation out of Mississauga and Brampton have been hit with over 150 charges.
The violent incidents date back to November when Peel Regional Police began investigating a string of eight home invasions, robberies and carjackings in Brampton.
In one of the home break-ins a male victim suffered a life-threatening serious gunshot wound to the lower body, Chief Nishan Duraiappah said on Tuesday.
The break-ins, carjackings, robberies and increase in violent crime led police to launch Project Warlock – an investigation that saw officers lay more than 150 against 18 people and seize four firearms, $55,000 in luxury items and 12 vehicles valued at approximately $1.2 million.
Duraiappah said Mississauga and Brampton have seen a startling 58 per cent year-over-year increase in violent carjackings and a 350 per cent spike in the number of home invasions.
He said individuals are “waking up to firearms,” and children “are being traumatized” during the incident.
“It has forever changed the lives of some of these families and these children, the way they live on a day-to-day basis,” Duraiappah said at a press conference on Tuesday.
The chief said the arrests are expected to make a “significant” dent in violent crimes across the region but won’t end the trend of rising crime rates with Peel experiencing “16 to 18 vehicles stolen a day.”
He said that while police are cutting into the number of stolen vehicles in the region, “the method that they are being stolen is changing dominantly to violent offences.”
“Everyone deserves to be safe in their homes, cars and at work,” the chief said. “Our community is not a place for this type of criminality and Peel Regional Police will do everything to seize illegal firearms, arrest those who are terrorizing residents and deter criminality.”
Dep. Chief Nick Milinovich said the suspects would “look for opportunities for people they can victimize” and target “luxury items” and vehicles.
Some of the accused are in their 20s but some are minors. One of the accused is 14 years old.
The charges range from weapons offences and breach of release, to firearm, drug, and intimate partner violence charges among others.
