A community centre in Mississauga is shutting its doors for two years to undergo repairs and improvements.
The Carmen Corbasson Community Centre, located at 1399 Cawthra Road, will close on June 20 with plans to reopen in Fall 2024.
Major renovations planned for the community centre will include an addition on the southeast side of the existing building, containing a new “state-of-the-art” aquatic centre looking out at the woodlot and an equipment-based fitness facility on the floor above.
The city says the Mississauga Seniors’ Centre is not part of the scope of the redevelopment project, and will remain open throughout the redevelopment.
The recreation centre and arena was first built in 1972 under the name Cawthra Arena.
The building underwent major renovations in 2000 to expand the gym and modernize facilities throughout.
Now, 22 years later, the City of Mississauga wants to update the recreational facility for its residents once again.
On the city’s website, it says the project “will aim to serve the community through improving the quality of recreational services and implementing high accessibility and green building standards.”
The renovations are part of the City of Mississauga’s Strategic Plan and intend to follow the City’s design principles to “integrate sound, functional, accessible, and attractive buildings.”
Construction is planned to begin in July.
