Impaired driving charges have been laid following a hit-and-run crash in Brampton after a driver was caught with no front plate and no headlights, police say.

The OPP says the crash happened in Brampton on Dec. 30 but the driver fled the scene.

But later that day, an officer was on patrol in Caledon on Airport Road when they spotted a vehicle being driven with no front licence plate and no headlights.

Police pulled the driver over and found the vehicle had “significant front-end collision damage.”

A picture of the vehicle shared by police shows a black vehicle with heavy damage including headlights which appear to have been torn off.

Investigators identified the driver as the same one involved in the Brampton crash, and say the driver was also impaired by alcohol.

The 30-year-old male driver from Cambridge was arrested and charged with multiple offences including operation while impaired.

The OPP says Surjeet Singh, 30, of Cambridge, has been charged with operation while impaired – alcohol, failure or refusal to comply with demand, driving motor vehicle with open container of liquor, drive with improper headlights, drive motor vehicle – fail to display two plates, operate unsafe vehicle.

The driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days while the vehicle impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to make a court appearance in Orangeville on Jan. 16. to answer to the charges.

Police say anyone who sees an unsafe driver or suspects a driver of operating while impaired by drugs or alcohol is encouraged to call 911 and report it when safe to do so.
