Historic pharmacy celebrates 100th anniversary in Mississauga and Brampton

A pharmacy chain with stores across the GTA is celebrating its centennial and a history that started in Mississauga and Brampton.

First opening in the Village of Port Credit in 1924, Hooper’s Pharmacy and Vitamin Shop is a local institution.

Hooper’s was a pioneer and innovator of complementary medicine and compounding integration, becoming the first compounding pharmacy in the country in 1986.

The original Hooper’s store on Lakeshore Road was opened by Lawrence J. Hooper after graduating from the Ontario College of Pharmacy in 1923.

Currently located in the historic Dominion Bank building which opened in 1948 in Mississauga, the building recently received historic status and has been the home of Hooper’s Mississauga location since 2003.

The building was designed by architect Douglas Kertland, known for designing the Automotive Building at the Canadian National Exhibition. He also designed many buildings for Toronto Dominion Bank.for the Dominion Bank, forerunner to the Toronto Dominion Bank.

Hooper’s has expanded to five stores in its 100 years of business in Ontario, including locations in Brampton, Oakville, Toronto and Vaughan.

The pharmacy offers a variety of vitamins, supplements, and compound pharmacy products “for discontinued pharmaceutical brands or natural medicine supplements.”
