A historic home was destroyed by fire in Mississauga.
Fire broke out at the home at 5306 Mississauga Rd. in Streetsville early Thursday morning, according to several posts on social media.
Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
Peel Regional Police told INsauga.com they responded alongside fire crews at 12:46 a.m. on Thursday. The fire is not considered to be suspicious, police said.
Ward 11 Coun. Brad Butt indicated the home had historic value.
“Real shame to see this historic house at the south end of #Streetsville destroyed by fire today,” Butt said in a post on X. “Thank you to the quick work of @mississaugafes and fortunately no one was hurt. Another piece of our history likely gone forever.”
Reached later by phone, Butt said the home was likely built in early 1800s. The wooden structure was typical of homes built at this time in the village area.
The home is listed online on the City of Mississauga heritage register, but it wasn’t designated.
A City of Mississauga spokesperson said the home was a one-and-half storey neo-Gothic/Ontario vernacular style frame farmhouse, commonly found in the agricultural settings and formerly found throughout the city.
It was listed for sale and sold for $800,000 in 2020, online real estate records indicate.
The listing suggests the home wasn’t in good condition as it was being sold as a building lot. There were no interior photos of the home.
