Two condo towers have been approved for a busy Burlington intersection that will ultimately see a larger redevelopment.
When constructed, the project at 784 Brant St. near Ghent Avenue will see buildings of 25 and 18 storeys that will contain 444 residential units and businesses on the ground floor.
The goal of the developer is to build on three of the four corners of the intersection in the established neighbourhood, but the other projects will move forward separately.
If all of the projects proceed, it will significantly change the look of the area, which is now occupied by an open field, parking lot, older homes, an office building and a small apartment.
The concept for the redevelopment was launched in 2020 and several public meetings have already been held.
The project has faced several barriers over the years including concerns about the properties falling within a floodplain.
Residents have also complained about the new buildings changing the character of the neighbourhood as well as the increased traffic through the community that will come when the new residents move in. Also, some stated concerns about the noise, shadows and disruptions that will be created during the lengthy construction period of a development of this magnitude.
However, in approving 784 Brant, the city believed it fit with plans to increase growth near highways and transit.
