The appearance of yellow bars blocking some seats on MiWay buses caused confusion recently.

A rider found the yellow bars or rails blocking a seat, according to a recent post on Reddit.

“Found this seat installation at the centre seat of the last row in a Mississauga Transit bus,” the post reads. “Wondering why was these yellow ‘rails’ added.”

The yellow structure is a “seat disabler,” a City of Mississauga spokesperson tells insauga.com.

“This safety feature is installed in seats on MiWay buses which have no protection in front of them (eg. a railing) to prevent a passenger from falling forward in case of a sudden stop,” the spokesperson said.

The seat disablers have been in the buses for several years.

In 2017, MiWay conducted an internal evaluation of all buses to identify any unprotected seats, the spokesperson added.

MiWay worked with bus manufacturers to implement seat safety measures from 2017 to 2020.

“All existing buses were retrofitted and all new buses come with this safety feature installed,” the spokesperson added.

Still, people question the feature and wonder if it really is safer.

“It makes no sense since these buses are crammed like a sardine can,” one person wrote on Reddit. “Maybe in the 90s it would’ve made more sense. Standing anywhere and everywhere is way more dangerous than sitting here.”
