daylight saving time end ontario 2024

It’s still officially summer but as the days get shorter, many people wonder when daylight saving time ends.

Daylight saving time is the practice of moving the clocks forward one hour from standard time in the spring and changing them back again in the fall.

Aside from Saskatchewan and the Yukon, every province and territory in Canada, including Ontario, makes the switch each spring and fall. Ontario residents moved their clocks forward one hour on March 10.

This year, the end of daylight saving time is 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3 — still nearly two months away.

The springtime switch can feel like losing an hour of sleep but the fall gives people that extra hour in the morning.

Daylight saving time was implemented so people would have more daylight time in the evening during the spring and summer. It reportedly started informally in 1908 in Thunder Bay but Germany was the first country to officially start the practice on April 30, 1916.

Although back in 2020 the Ford government passed legislation that would end the bi-annual changing of the clock in Ontario, thus far it hasn’t happened. The province has said neighbouring provinces and states need to pass similar legislation for the plan to move ahead.
