According to CPA Ontario, “tax refunds are typically the single largest cash infusion for low-income households, yet more than a billion dollars of income benefits and tax credits go unclaimed each year in Canada.”

For those in need, CPA Ontario has been offering a Tax Preparation Assistance (TPA) which has helped to bridge this gap and make a difference in the lives of those in need for over 50 years.

This program features CPAs from across Ontario who volunteer their time to prepare tax returns for eligible individuals and families, free of charge.

As tax experts, CPAs ensure that each client can gain access to the tax refunds and credits that are only available by filing an income tax return.

According to CPA Ontario, in 2019, volunteer CPAs filed over 25,000 returns and close to 10 per cent of total returns filed in Ontario.

Over 1,300 volunteers have signed up to volunteer to-date across Ontario.

This year, in the Halton-Peel regions, over 165 CPAs have volunteered to participate in the program.

The Region of Peel is also offering free income tax clinics, where eligible families may file their taxes for free, which may ensure benefits are obtained including Canada child benefit, disability benefit, GST/HST credit payment and others.

These clinics are offered through the Canadian government’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.

The Region’s 2020 tax clinic will take place at 10 Peel Centre Drive, Suite A and B in Brampton on March 7, April 4 and April 18 for tax returns for 2018 and 2019 only from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

It will also take place on May 2 and May 9 for tax returns for 2018 or previous years only from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
