If you’re looking for new things to do this winter in Brampton to make the snowy season fly by, this popular Olympic sport might be the answer, and they’re hosting a free open house.
The Brampton Curling Club is one of the city’s most popular and long-standing sports centres, giving beginners an accessible and social experience as they learn to curl.
Ahead of their upcoming fall season, the club is holding a free-to-attend open house on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. No experience is necessary and all equipment is provided, visitors just need to bring in a clean pair of shoes.
Registration for the upcoming season is open to all members of the public starting Sept. 21.
Curling has rapidly expanded its popularity over the past several years, owing to its success at the Winter Olympic Games and its accessibility to players of all ages, skill levels and fitness types.
Players form a team, then compete by taking turns throwing rocks down a sheet of ice guided by their teammates and using brooms to sweep the rock towards its intended target. Points are awarded for accuracy, making it a fun skill-based sport without being physically demanding.
Here are 5 reasons to try out this popular Olympic sport:
1. Make the winter fly by with a fun indoor sport: The winter months can drag on, especially for those who typically play outdoor summer sports. But with their upcoming season happening over the winter inside the Brampton Curling Club’s pristine facility, it’s the perfect way to stay warm while still getting some fun exercise in. You’ll be surprised how fast the winter passes by!
2. Curling is accessible and fun for all skill levels: New to curling? Learn to play and try it for yourself during the Brampton Curling Club’s upcoming open house and learn to curl sessions, which teach new players all they need to know in a welcoming and relaxed environment – especially perfect for children and youth (as young as eight years old) who haven’t found their sport yet. And for those who already love to curl, the club offers a competitive experience with weekly league games and weekend tournaments (called bonspiels in curling).
Additionally, curling is not a very physically demanding sport. This makes it easily accessible for players of all fitness levels and all ages, from young children to seniors.
3. Very affordable: Compared to many other fun events and activities, curling at the Brampton Curling Club doesn’t break the bank. Membership fees are kept low and affordable, and players can either bring their own equipment from home or borrow it from the club, so there’s a low financial investment to try it out.
4. Great way to socialize and meet new people: There’s tons of friendly faces to meet and play with at the Brampton Curling Club, and they love meeting new members! Weekly leagues are arranged for players, so there’s no need to find your own teammates if you’re new to the club. Each game takes about two hours, and afterwards most curlers move to the bar to have a drink and socialize with each other.
There’s even more opportunity to meet other players through the optional weekend bonspiels (tournaments) and leagues that change up the teams throughout the year, ensuring players get to enjoy curling with as many members of the club as possible.
5. High-quality amenities: The Brampton Curling Club is designed to provide the most comfortable curling experience possible. The spacious facility boasts six ice sheets allowing for multiple games to run concurrently, and includes a range of amenities including heated viewing areas, a full bar, and locker rooms for members to store their personal belongings.
As one of Brampton’s most popular sports institutions, the Brampton Curling Club is continuing to grow and welcome in new members as they head into their newest season.
