Ontario has statutory holidays for nearly every month of the year and the next one is coming up soon.
The dreary winter weather may have some people dreaming of a break and there is one coming up in February.
The Province of Ontario identifies nine statuary holidays where most employees who qualify are entitled to take off work and be paid public holiday pay.
Alternatively, employers can offer employees public holiday pay plus premium pay for all hours worked on the public holiday, according to the Province of Ontario.
Employers could also offer regular wages for all hours worked on the public holiday and provide another substitute holiday for which the employee must be paid public holiday pay.
These are the nine public holidays in Ontario in 2024:
- New Year’s Day: Monday, Jan. 1
- Family Day: Monday, Feb. 19
- Good Friday: Friday, March 29
- Victoria Day: Monday, May 20
- Canada Day: Monday, July 1
- Labour Day: Monday, Sept. 2
- Thanksgiving Day: Monday, Oct. 14
- Christmas Day: Wednesday, Dec. 25
- Boxing Day: Thursday, Dec. 26
Easter Monday on April 1, the Civic Day on Monday, Aug. 5, Truth and Reconciliation Day on Sept. 30 and Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 are not officially public holidays although some businesses and government offices may close those days.
Many cities, including Toronto, designate the Civic Day as a holiday.
It is interesting to note that Ontario is the only province in Canada where Boxing Day is a statutory holiday.
This year April, June, August and November don’t have official statutory holidays.
