Pearson Airport flights to St. John's cancelled

Stormy winter weather in Eastern Canada has led to the cancellation of most scheduled flights today from Pearson Airport in Mississauga to St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Pearson officials said via social media on Monday morning that “airlines have cancelled four of the five flights still scheduled to fly to St. John’s today from Toronto Pearson.”

The capital of Newfoundland, surrounding areas and also Nova Scotia are under a winter storm warning as a large system moves northeast from the U.S., according to weather forecasts.

Widespread warnings of heavy and wind-blown snow for Monday are in effect for much of Canada’s East Coast. Total snowfall of 20 to 25 centimetres is expected in addition to wind gusts of 70 to 80 km/h.

Officials at St. John’s Airport said Monday morning via X (formerly Twitter) that “heavy snowfall is anticipated today in the St. John’s region, which may impact flight activity. Please check with your airline for any alerts.”

Meanwhile, weather conditions at Pearson today are mostly clear and “operations are running smoothly,” airport officials said, adding 451 flight departures and 470 arrivals are scheduled for Monday.

Flights into and out of Pearson Airport have been impacted on-and-off the last two weeks due to nasty winter weather both in the GTA and other parts of Canada and south of the border in the U.S.

Last Wednesday, heavy fog at Pearson and across the GTA was the culprit as 138 flights into and out of Pearson were cancelled.
