More than 50 mm of rain could fall today in parts of southern Ontario including the GTA.

The rain is expected to start late Tuesday afternoon or evening tapering off through Wednesday morning, the warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada states.

The warning is in effect for Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto, northern and southern Durham Region, Caledon, Mississauga, Brampton Halton Hills and Milton.

Showers are expected to push into the region through the afternoon as a moisture-laden system moves into the Great Lakes Basin, the warning states.

The showers are expected to become more widespread and heavy at times on Tuesday evening. There is also a risk of thunderstorms as a more unstable air mass moves in.

Showers will continue into Wednesday morning but are expected to become more isolated and ease off in intensity.

Some areas could get more than 50 mm of rain but there still remains a high degree of uncertainty, the warning states.

Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton and Niagara Region are not included in the warning.
