Heavy rain lifts manhole covers as warning issued for drivers in Mississauga and Brampton

Police are warning drivers to be on the lookout for manhole covers coming out of the road due to heavy rain in Mississauga and Brampton.

The alert was issued shortly after 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday amid severe thunderstorm watches and warnings across Ontario, including in Mississauga and Brampton.

A spokesperson for Peel Regional Police said the deluge has caused manhole covers on two Mississauga streets to lift out of the ground, and police are warning drivers to be aware of the potential danger as they drive around the region.

“Keep your eyes open. It could happen,” said a spokesperson for Peel Regional Police adding that drivers should keep their attention on the road during the storm.

So far issues with manhole covers have been reported at Millcreek Drive and Derry Road, and at Golden Orchard Drive and Rathburn Road East. Drivers may want to avoid the areas if possible and should be cautious when driving in Mississauga and Brampton.

“Remember to use your full headlight system,” police said. “If you see a manhole cover displaced call 3-1-1 or 905-453-3311.”

Environment Canada says the thunderstorms are tracking eastward over southern Ontario and may produce damaging wind gusts, torrential downpours and large hail.

The storms could produce wind gusts up to 90 km/h, local rainfall amounts up to 50 mm and up to nickel-size hail are possible.
