A heat warning is in effect for much of southern Ontario today.

The heat event will continue today (July 15) and possibly into Tuesday for some areas, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The warning is in effect for Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Burlington, Oakville, Hamilton, Niagara Region and Durham Region.

A humid airmass has reached the region, the Environment Canada warning states.

Daytime maximum temperatures could reach 29 C with humidex values near 40 C.

There will be little relief at night as minimum temperatures are expected to be near 20 C.

Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high-risk category, the warning states.

There won’t be any relief until later Tuesday when a cooler airmass is expected to arrive. Evening lows could drop down to 15 C on Tuesday evening.

There is a 40 per cent chance of rain or thunderstorms in the region today and Tuesday.

Extreme heat can affect everyone’s health, the warning states.

Drink plenty of water regularly, even before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration.

Limit direct sun exposure. Shade yourself by wearing a wide-brimmed, breathable hat and/or an umbrella. Never leave people, particularly children, or pets inside a parked vehicle.

Ask a health professional, such as a pharmacist or physician, how medications or health conditions can affect your risk in the heat. When it’s hot, eat cool, light meals. Avoid using the oven.
