Shohei Ohtani

Will he or won’t he?

That is the question being asked by Blue Jays fans and, in fact, all fans of baseball today as the Shohei Otani watch reaches a fever pitch in Toronto, especially on social media.

Twitter is all a-buzz about the Japanese two-way star and reining American League MVP landing at Pearson Airport in Mississauga tonight, or not landing at Pearson at all; and about Ohtani signing with the Toronto Blue Jays or not signing with the club.

Most of the literally hundreds of threads on the topic are having fun with the idea and all the speculation, though as of Friday evening no official word has come down as to where Ohtani signs or whether he is in or on his way to Toronto at all.

Is Ohtani, called the Japanese Babe Ruth because his other-wordily skills both as a slugger and as a pitcher, leaving the Anaheim Angels after six years and joining the Jays? Nobody really knows yet or if they do they’re not telling us, leaving fans to speculate to their heart’s content.

A private jet that left Anaheim this afternoon bound for Pearson drew plenty of fans to X and to flight-tracking sites and there was even a post on the site formerly known as Twitter from a user who said Blue Jay infielder and Ohtani pal Yusei Kikuchi had made dinner reservations for 50-plus at a Toronto restaurant that drew lots of attention and 600 re-tweets.
A CBC reporter later declared that Ohtani was NOT on the private plane from Anaheim, which was in fact carrying Canadian businessman of Dragon’s Den fame Robert Herjavec, with a USA reporter confirming that Ohtani was still at home in southern California.

The Dodger fan site Halo Nation is saying Ohtani is signing with the Jays, for what it’s worth, but most major media outlets are withholding judgement until something official is declared.

In the meantime, Jays fans are having some fun with it all. Stay tuned.
