If you were expecting a package to be delivered that hasn’t showed up yet this holiday season, you might not be alone — Canada Post is experiencing record volumes of holiday parcels this year!
It’s true that Canada Post has a difficult task playing Santa at this time of year. Last year was a record-breaker for the mail giant over the holiday season, and it seems like this year is no different.
Since the end of November of this year, Canada Post has been on “Yellow Alert,” meaning there are ongoing issues with mail delivery.
“Important: We’re working hard to process and deliver record holiday parcel volumes as quickly as possible,” says the recent Canada Post Service Alert. “In some cases, customers may experience a delay in delivery. We continue to devote extra resources to serve you and apologize for any delays.”
Online shopping is, of course, huge at this time of year. People purchasing gifts who might not have time to shop at a traditional brick-and-mortar store, or prefer the convenience of buying gifts at a click, are ordering things online at high volumes.
In 2016 alone, Canada Post delivered 20 million parcels from Nov. 28-Dec. 23. On December 5, 2016, they also hit an all-time record for parcel deliveries in a day — a whopping 1.52 million deliveries were made.
And it’s only getting worse.
“Eight out of 10 Canadians shop online and they’re buying more items more often each year,” says Canada Post. “Canada Post delivers two of every three parcels they order.”
So, if you’re experiencing delays with Canada Post deliveries at this time of year, it’s likely that many of your friends and family are, too.
That being said, there are some key dates to remember if you’re using the mail service and need your items to arrive on time.
You should send a holiday package within Canada via Priority Shipping by Dec. 21, or via Xpresspost by Dec. 20 for your package to arrive by Christmas. The deadline for shipping a package via Regular post has passed — it was Dec. 11.
