The government of Canada is advising Canadians to exercise a high degree of caution if travelling to, or in, Mexico.

This, according to the government of Canada website, is due to high levels of criminal activity, in addition to demonstrations, occasional illegal roadblocks throughout the country, and protests.

In addition, the Canadian government is also warning Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to several northern and western states.

These states include the following:

  • Chihuahua
  • Coahuila (except the city of Saltillo)
  • Durango
  • Nuevo León (except the city of Monterrey)
  • Sinaloa (except the city of Mazatlán)
  • Sonora (except the cities of Hermosillo and Guaymas/San Carlos)
  • Tamaulipas.
  • Guerrero (including Acapulco but excluding the cities of Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo and Taxco)
  • Michoacán (excluding the city of Morelia)
  • Colima (excluding the city of Manzanillo)

These warnings are a result of high levels of violence linked, mainly, to organized crime.
