Historic Bovaird House is one of the locations you can explore in Brampton for Doors Open Ontario 2024.

You can get a behind-the-scenes look at museum exhibits, historic locations, libraries and much more in Brampton this weekend for the return of Doors Open Ontario.

The province-wide program was launched in 2002 and gives members of the public free and open access to explore municipal buildings and heritage properties in their communities.

For 2024 the City of Brampton has added several new locations for Doors Open Ontario including some historic structures that have been part of Brampton’s landscape for more than 100 years.

Doors Open 2024 runs this Saturday from 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Here are some of the locations across Brampton you can explore:

Built in 1854, the Old Fire Hall served as Brampton’s first municipal building and was originally for use as a market hall. By 1880, the second floor served as the council chambers. The Old Fire Hall now serves as office space for the Regional Headquarters of The Lorne Scots Regiment.

Historic Bovaird House

The Bovaird House is a mid-19th-century Ontario farmhouse that’s been restored by volunteers to its original appearance. The home features authentic artifacts with craftsmanship demonstrating the history of the house which has five fireplaces, original plank flooring, hand-blown imported windowpanes and heritage-inspired gardens.

Alderlea

Meaning “meadow of alder trees,” Alderlea is a well-preserved heritage building built at the height of the Victorian era and is one of the finest examples of Italianate villa architecture in Ontario. The 19th-century mansion has been restored and guests can see how the house has been adapted for use as a popular heritage venue.

Lorne Scots Regimental Museum

The Lorne Scots Regimental Museum opened in 1980 in what was once the old Brampton firehall. Come and explore the collection of historical and military artifacts that showcases the rich history of the regiment from 1792 to today. After your visit, walk up nearby Carnegie Lane for a preview of the museum’s new home in the former Carnegie Library.

Mount Pleasant Village Library

The Mount Pleasant Village is at the heart of the community and is a shared space for a public school, library and city community rooms. The library is connected by a glass link to a restored train station, which houses community programming space.

Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA)

Take in a behind-the-scenes tour of the PAMA facilities and archives, including the historic Peel courthouse, jail and Land Registry Office.
