A giant Canadian flag that will fly from a pole eight-stories high will become a prominent feature along Mississauga’s lakefront this summer.
The flag will be flown at Lakefront Promenade Park and should be visible for miles on land, but also serve as an important landmark for Lake Ontario boaters making their way to Port Credit.
“It will certainly be one of the largest flags around,” said Mississauga Ward 1 Councillor Stephen Dasko who has been involved in the project. “It’s a great way to honour our heritage and culture and will be something that visitors to the park can enjoy.”
Dasko said the pole will be situated right at the water’s edge.
The councillor hopes the flag will be in place in time for Canada Day.
He said the flag will be especially important for boaters and that members of the Port Credit Yacht Club are very excited by the project.
Dasko said when the four large smoke stacks from the old Lakeview Generating Station came down those on the lake lost their wayfinding station. He said this should make it easier for boaters to make their way to Port Credit.
“With an eight-story tall pole and flag this should serve as a new marker,” Dasko said. “It will a great new feature for the community.”
