Some Brampton residents will be able to kick their leaves to the curb again this fall for easy cleanup by the city’s leaf vacuum trucks.

Starting on Monday (Oct. 23), the city says the leaf vacuum program will start for the 2023 fall season which runs until mid-December, depending on weather conditions.

The trucks will start collection in downtown Brampton next week before moving on to the Churchville Area on Oct. 30, with the city saying each eligible street will be vacuumed a minimum of three times while the program is up and running.

Residents in eligible areas can simply rake their leaves to the curb for leaf vacuum vehicles and work crews to collect, which are then brought to the Region of Peel’s Composting Facility.

“Fallen leaves can become slippery when wet, creating hazardous conditions and increasing the likelihood of falls,” the city said in a release. “They also can block the drainage of water into catch-basins and become an obstacle to accessing fire hydrants and electrical boxes.”

The city says the leaf vacuum program is only offered in areas with the most mature trees and the highest volume of leaves, while all other areas of the city are serviced by the Region’s waste collection.

Here are some tips on how you can get your yard ready for leaf vacuum vehicles:

  • Rake only leaves to the curb (not onto the street). Do not include garbage, wood, rocks, brush or brick
  • Keep leaves away from trees, street signs, fire hydrants, electrical boxes, catchbasins and other obstacles
  • Keep leaves on the boulevard and off the roadway
  • Bag backyard leaves and place them at the curb in labelled, open, rigid, reusable containers; bushel baskets or paper yard waste bags on your scheduled waste collection day for pickup by the Region of Peel.

You can check the city’s interactive map to see all the eligible neighbourhoods or call 311 or 905-874-2130 for more information.
