Get paid $1,800 to beautify Brampton through traffic box public art program

Local artists can help make Brampton a more visually engaging city and get paid $1,800 for their work through the return of Brampton’s BOXED public art program.

First launched in 2021, Brampton BOXED is part of the city’s public art initiatives and offers artists a paid opportunity to gain public art experience by creating artwork for traffic control boxes across the city.

Over a dozen traffic boxes have already been given an artistic makeover since the program first launched and the city is looking for another 10 artists to come up with designs to showcase their creativity.

Successful applicants will receive a $1,800 artist fee as compensation and could have their work featured on the city’s social media feeds and web pages.

With plans for murals, sculptures, monuments and many other projects, the city has approved additional funding for its public art strategy to bring more installations to Brampton communities. Starting in 2026 the fund will jump to $300,000 annually as the city’s Public Art Working Group looks for ways to add public art elements into existing and future projects.

Those funds will be on top of more than $1.2 million already set aside for the city’s Public Art Investment project.

“By transforming community spaces, public art invites residents and visitors to experience artistic excellence throughout the city,” the city said in a release.

The city worked with local artists on 34 new public artworks last year at a cost of around $700,000, and says the new framework and funding will allow the program to expand over the next five years. Funding for additional projects could also go ahead with approval from the mayor.

The deadline to apply for the Brampton Traffic Box Art Program is Aug. 7. For more information visit www.Brampton.ca/publicart.
