A major gas company will soon make it mandatory to pre-pay for fuel at most of its Ontario stations.

The change will take effect on Sept. 3 at many Petro-Canada locations and is aimed at reducing the risk of theft, said Leithan Slade, a spokesperson for Suncor, which owns Petro-Canada.

“We’re introducing a safer and more efficient way for customers to fill up at the majority of Petro-Canada retail sites in Ontario,” Slade said.

Customers will be prompted to pay for fuel either in store or at the pump prior to filling up their tanks.

“We’re making this proactive change to ensure everyone’s safety at our sites and to reduce the risk of fuel theft,” he said.

“In addition to signs posted at our sites, there will be additional communications to ensure customers are aware of the change.”

Pre-pay is common at Petro-Canada sites in other parts of the country, Slade noted.

He said Gas+ sites that have started to rebrand to Petro-Canada aren’t part of the rollout.
