From updated granite roadways and sidewalks to new traffic lights and power lines, the city wants to hear from residents about its $16 million overhaul of the downtown.

Brampton is aiming to transform the city’s downtown through the Revitalization Streetscape Project with plans for more public spaces, refurbished roads and sidewalks with granite pavers, and improved infrastructure. The project includes a new bike path, street furniture and replacing planters.

More than $16 million in funding was approved for the project by the city in 2021, but a recent report showed that increased materials and construction costs have led to more than $6.5 million in required funds.

The city is holding an open house next week and is inviting all residents to come and learn about the future plans for downtown Brampton and give feedback on the project.

“This is an opportunity to view the planned improvements, ask questions of city staff and learn how the project will benefit the community,” the city said in a release.

The Downtown Streetscape Construction Open House will run on Wednesday at the Brampton City Hall Conservatory from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

An updated report on the project showed some $2.5 million in additional funds is needed for granite materials, which the city says will be used “to enhance the durability, longevity and aesthetics of the downtown streetscape project.”

Another $2.8 million is required for the construction of new traffic signals at six downtown intersections, and $700,000 for the replacement of streetlight powerlines.

The update also includes $365,000 in design and constriction “contingency,” according to the report.

The Downtown Revitalization Streetscape Project is part of Brampton’s 30-year Integrated Downtown Plan. Fore more information visit www.Brampton.ca.
