Officials at Pearson Airport in Mississauga say some flights could be delayed Tuesday afternoon and possibly into the evening as “frequent lightning strikes” continue to target Canada’s biggest and busiest airport.

With uncharacteristic winter thunderstorms rolling through the GTA and elsewhere on Tuesday, lightning in addition to heavy rain at times has been part of the weather mix.

“Pearson is currently experiencing frequent lightning strikes, which may lead to some flights being delayed this afternoon,” airport officials said in a post to X (formerly Twitter).

Environment Canada sensors at Pearson Airport indicated early Tuesday morning that the area could see thunderstorms by midday into the late afternoon.

As always, Pearson officials urge travellers to check the status of their flight before heading to the airport.
