Bianca Andreescu narrowly missed adding what would have been an impressive accomplishment to her tennis resume early this morning (June 8) at the French Open in Paris.

Attempting to become the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam title in both singles and doubles play, the 22-year-old Mississauga native and her partner Michael Venus (New Zealand) fell in a tight match to Japan’s Miyu Kato and Germany’s Tim Putz in the mixed doubles final at Roland-Garros.

After starting quickly with a 6-4 opening-set victory, Andreescu and Venus dropped the next two sets 4-6, 6-10 to their opponents.

Thursday’s match marked the first time Andreescu has competed in mixed doubles competition at a major.

The Mississauga tennis star was also vying this morning to become the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam event since she pulled off the feat herself with a stunning singles victory at the U.S. Open in 2019.

Andreescu, who’ll turn 23 on June 16, was ousted from singles action in Paris in the third round last Saturday.

Andreescu/Venus defeated Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and American Nathaniel Lammons in semi-final action on Wednesday 7-6, 7-6 to advance to the doubles final.

In Tuesday’s quarter-final round, the Canadian and New Zealander defeated the seventh-seeded tandem of Marcelo Arevalo (El Salvador) and Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) 7-5, 3-6, 10-6.
