Another winter weather alert has been issued for parts of southern Ontario with a freezing rain warning in place for some communities on the banks of Lake Huron.

Environment Canada issued the freezing rain warning for Sarnia, parts of Lambton County, Watford and other areas near the Canada-U.S. border shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

The agency says to expect freezing rain or ice pellets that will turn into snow over the evening. The freezing rain is expected to ease up overnight as the weather becomes cloudy with a 40 percent chance of light snow.

But there’s still a risk of freezing drizzle overnight with an accumulation of snow and ice pellets of around 5 cm possible.

The poor weather could mean highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may be icy and slippery leading to “a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas,” Environment Canada says.

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.”

The freezing rain warning is expected to be lifted by Tuesday.

Other parts of the province are already seeing snow with winter weather and snowfall advisories in other parts of southern Ontario.

A travel advisory was issued for Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto, Halton Region, Durham Region, Hamilton and the Niagara Region. Between 5 to 15 cm of snow is possible with low visibility in areas of heavier snow.

The snow is expected to fall until Tuesday morning.
