Ontario drivers will no longer have to renew their licence plate stickers.

Effective March 13, Ontario will scrap the fee as well as the requirement for drivers to have a licence plate sticker, Ford announced.

The government is set to introduce red tape legislation that will also allow the province to refund any licence plate renewal fees that drivers have paid since March 2020.

While the renewal process will still be in place, it will cost drivers nothing and mean fewer line-ups at Service Ontario.

Apparently, the move gained overwhelming approval within the Conservative caucus when it was presented.

While Ontario Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney wouldn’t say whether it was happening as soon as this week, she did admit two weeks ago that the government was looking at “a number of options to cut costs for Ontarians.”

The government has said eliminating the licence plate stickers could save the province as much as $29 million in postage alone over the next five years.

UPDATE: You will also get a refund if you paid your sticker on or after March 2020 if you are in good standing with no tickets or if tickets have been paid up.

Vehicle owners should receive cheques in the mail starting at the end of March. They will still have to renew their plates every one or two years to ensure their insurance is still valid and pay any outstanding tolls or fines.
