More rain could present a flood risk to low-lying areas in Mississauga and Brampton.

Credit Valley Conservation issued a flood outlook statement Tuesday afternoon. The conservation authority monitors local conditions and weather forecasts to predict river and creek conditions in the Credit Valley watershed.

The low-pressure system that brought rainfall and above-freezing temperatures this past weekend elevated water levels and increased flow in watercourses throughout the watershed, the Credit Valley Conservation statement reads.

On Sunday, 25.1 mm of rain fell at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga. More rain and snow are expected on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

“Forecasted rainfall over the next 48 hours will likely keep watercourse levels high as the watershed is saturated,” the conservation authority said.

“Higher water levels may cause low-lying areas to flood resulting in streams and rivers becoming dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges, and dams.”

People should stay away from all watercourses, especially children and pets, the authority warned.
