GoodLife Fitness, with six gyms in Mississauga, has dismissed 480 employees across Canada due to fallout from COVID-19 restrictions.
The country’s largest fitness company recently announced that the nearly 500 group fitness instructors would be let go due to pandemic-related restrictions that reduced business for the London, Ontario-based company.
The company, founded in 1979, dismissed the employees from 189 clubs across Canada.
Company officials reportedly described the move as “a difficult decision.”
Most of those let go from their positions have not worked for the majority of the pandemic, given the restrictions on group activities.
The company noted that the pandemic has been difficult on fitness-related activities, especially those that include indoor group work.
Subsequently, GoodLife said it does not plan to expand its group fitness schedules in the near future to a point where it would bring back instructors.
The company said it will support the fitness instructors as they search for new jobs.
In Mississauga, GoodLife Fitness has locations at Square One, Heartland Town Centre, Meadowvale Town Centre, South Common Mall, Glen Erin Dr./Eglinton Ave. and at Pearson Airport.
