An overnight fire damaged a newly renovated library in Mississauga.

Crews were called to the Hazel McCallion Central Library at 301 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W. around 4 a.m. Wednesday, a Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson tells INsauga.com

The fire appears to have started in the area of the front door to the library, the spokesperson said.

The glass broke and the fire began to spread in the lobby area.

Sprinklers were activated, preventing the fire from spreading but there is water and smoke damage.

There were no injuries reported.

As of 7 a.m., fire crews remained at the library. The cause and origin are under investigation.

Hazel McCallion Central Library just reopened in December after $49 million in renovations.

Update: The Hazel McCallion Central library is closed Wednesday, a City of Mississauga spokesperson tells INsauga.com. Customers with bookings have been notified. Operations at all other Mississauga library locations and online services are still available.

Update 2:  The library will re-open Thursday August 14, at 9 a.m. with all public services available. The Noel Ryan Auditorium will remain closed for the near future as restoration continues. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
