More than 1,300 new electric vehicle charging stations are coming to Ontario, the provincial government announced Tuesday.
The province said it is building them in small and medium-sized communities.
“Improving EV charging infrastructure is essential to ensuring drivers are confident in electric vehicles,” Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said in a news release.
“By focusing on smaller and medium-sized communities, we’re filling gaps in underserved areas to build a more connected charging network for everyone in Ontario.”
The stations will be located at 270 sites across Ontario, including arenas, hospitals, recreation centres and parks.
It includes 190 stations in northern Ontario.
The province said the announcement is part of the government’s $63 million investment to build publicly accessible chargers in communities with less than 170,000 people, as well as Indigenous communities.
Each station will be Level 2, Level 3 or a combination of the two.
There were more than 201,000 registered EVs in Ontario as of October, including battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
By 2030, it’s expected there will be more than one million EVs on Ontario roads, the province said.
