A heat warning for Mississauga, Brampton and much of southern Ontario has been extended.

The boiling hot temperatures will continue through Thursday (July 6), Environment Canada said in a new statement today (July 5).

On Monday, Environment Canada issued a warning for Tuesday into Wednesday and possibly into Thursday. But that warning has been extended to continue through Thursday (July 6).

The humidex could make it feel up to 37 C to 40 C.

Areas near the lakes could be slightly cooler than regions further inland.

We will finally get a break on Friday when temperatures will be several degrees cooler, according to Environment Canada.

The hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category.

“Extreme heat affects everyone,” Environment Canada warns. “The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.”

Signs of heat illness include swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place. Also never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

The City of Mississauga has some suggestions to stay cool including public pools and splash pads. Brampton also has places for residents to go to escape the heat here.
