The Green Acres Motel, at mainstay on Lakeshore Rd. in the Lakeview area of Mississauga, could soon disappear.
In its place, a 10-story rental apartment building.
Built almost 60 years ago, the Green Acres Motel originally served as a stop for travelers who couldn’t quite make it to Toronto and needed an overnight place to stay. There were other such motels in the area but Green Acres has been one of the last to survive.
Notably, Terry Fox, during his Marathon of Hope, stopped in at the motel for a rest as he ran through Mississauga in July of 1980. Mississauga residents lined Lakeshore Rd. and raised $17,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society in honour of Fox that day.
A recent report presented to the City of Mississauga planning committee outlined the future plans for the location that call for 169 rental units on the property which is located on the north side of Lakeshore Rd. E and Fergus Ave.
The proposal is still going through the planning stage and Mississauga staff is addressing issues such parking, the height of the building, neighbourhood compatibility and other technical matters. Another report will be presented at a future meeting.
