Police are on the hunt for the driver of a grey minivan they say struck an “elderly” man early Wednesday morning at a busy north Mississauga intersection before speeding away from the scene.
The pedestrian was hit by the vehicle just before 6:30 a.m. at Britannia Road East and Hurontario Street. He’s in serious condition in hospital, but is expected to survive, a Peel Regional Police spokesperson told reporters in a late-morning update from the scene of the hit-and-run.
Police believe the vehicle involved is a minivan, either light or dark grey in colour. They’re urging the driver to turn themselves in to police and investigators are also asking for the public’s help in locating the driver, the vehicle or both.
It was dark at the time of the collision, police said, adding rain had also made the roadways slick.
After initially being taken to a local hospital, the man who was struck was then transported to a trauma centre, police said. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Police said they do not have a description of the driver of the minivan.
Britannia Road East, between Hurontario Street and Whittle Road, remains closed for the police investigation until further notice.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage is urged to call police at 905-453-2121, ext. 3710.
