Drivers who travel on Highway 407 can expect to pay more on much of the highway next year.
The company that owns Highway 407 ETR, 407 ETR International Inc., had frozen toll rates in 2020 in response to the pandemic.
But the four-year rate freeze will end on Feb. 1, 2024, according to a press release from 407 ETR International Inc.
Highway 407 ETR toll highway spans 108 kilometres from Burlington in the west to Pickering in the east.
Highway 407 East, which stretches 43.4 kilometres from Pickering to Clarington, is operated by the provincial government and is not included in this rate hike.
The rate schedule for Highway 407 ETR had been updated annually before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, traffic levels are stabilizing with more drivers resuming regular activities like commuting to and from work, according to the release.
The 407 ETR’s new rate schedule for light vehicles (5,000 kilograms or less) reflects an increase of one to 11 cents per kilometre depending on the time of day and zone travelled, the press release states.
The majority of 407 ETR’s personal customers can expect a monthly bill increase of less than $5.
The funds cover the operation of the highway including ongoing maintenance, 24/7 highway monitoring, roadside assistance, winter operations and policing and enforcement.
“407 ETR remains committed to providing the exceptional service we’re known for both on and off the road,” said 407 ETR president and CEO, Javier Tamargo. “Since 1999, traffic on the highway has grown by over 70 per cent. Ontarians continue to recognize the value of a safe, fast and reliable commute.”
