A motorist charged with stunt driving one week ago in Mississauga is now facing additional charges after police pulled over a speeding car on Highway 401 near Cobourg early Thursday morning.
Ontario Provincial Police said they stopped a vehicle just after 2 a.m. on the major highway in Cramahe, about 25 kilometres east of Cobourg. The car was travelling westbound at 138 km/h in a posted 110 km/h area, and without proper headlights, police added.
Northumberland OPP said in a news release the driver was found to be driving with a suspended licence due to a stunt driving charge laid last Friday in Mississauga.
Stunt driving in Ontario is defined as travelling at:
- 50 km/h or more over the speed limit where the posted limit is above 80 km/h
- 40 km/h or more over where the limit is 80 km/h or less
- a speed of 150 km/h or more on any road or highway
A 20-year-old resident of North York has been charged with:
- driving while under suspension
- speeding 1-49 km/h over posted limit
- drive without proper headlights
The person’s vehicle was impounded for seven days. The driver will appear in court at a later date.
In the past week, OPP say they have laid 83 speeding-related charges in the Northumberland area, which includes Cobourg and a number of smaller municipalities north of Lake Ontario and south of Peterborough.
