After months of back-and-forth with city staff, Brampton City Council has given the go-ahead to hire dozens of new enforcement officers and more than triple the number of speed cameras on the roads.

On Wednesday, council approved budget amendments to bring 185 new automated speed enforcement cameras online in Brampton to capture more images of vehicles speeding in school and community safety zones.

The first 20 of the new ASE cameras are expected to be set up for when Brampton’s new Automated Speed ASE Camera Processing Centre opens by the end of July, with hiring approval for 26 more enforcement officers on top of 16 positions previously announced.

An earlier report to council showed the amendments would cost some $5.97 million, but the city did not disclose the updated cost of the budget changes.

Mayor Patrick Brown said having more ASE cameras in Brampton will change driver’s behaviours, calling the tickets “a voluntary tax for those that want to drive in an egregious, reckless manner.”

The first cameras are on track to be installed by July 31 with the full complement of 185 online by June 2025.

ASE ticketing will be brought in-house when the new processing centre opens in Brampton following a move from Toronto, and will help deter speeding, increase road safety, and create more revenue, the city says.

The ASE Processing Centre is projected to generate approximately $30 million in revenue per year with annual projected expenses of $13 million. Additional expenses for the ASE expansion include $1.9 million for work on the ASE Processing Centre, $91,000 for technology for new hires, and $300,000 for a truck dedicated to installing, relocating and removing ASE signage.

Brampton’s current ticket processing is limited by space, staffing and increasing demand according to the city, leaving some ASE cameras running for as little as two hours each day.

The city said the additional cameras and ASE centre will “generate sufficient funding to repay all operating and capital commitments.”
