As part of the Federal and Provincial governments’ 2020 pre-budget consultations, Brampton is advocating on a number of key priorities.
During a recent meeting with local members of Parliament including Ruby Sahota, Maninder Sidhu, Ramesh Sangha, Kamal Khera and Sonia Sidhu, Mayor Patrick Brown shared details of Brampton’s federal budget requests.
Together, they discussed the importance of long-term transit funding and the need for strengthening the city’s infrastructure in order to meet the rapidly-growing population.
The Provincial submission document was presented by Mayor Patrick Brown to Ontario Premier Doug Ford at a meeting that took place on Jan. 24.
An important discussion, among Brampton’s most pressing matters, included chronic underfunding in health care and the need for immediate funding in order to support the expansion of Peel Memorial Hospital and a third health care facility.
During a press conference, Ford said, “We have $27 billion over the next 10 years of building new hospitals (across the province). Yes, we will support a hospital in Brampton.”
Mayor Patrick Brown said, “I recognize the fact that the crisis we’re in wasn’t created in a year. This has been a crisis over the last 15 to 20 years.”
“The fact that we’re at the table talking to the premier directly about it when only 2 days ago, we had our physicians and patients come forward with a plea for help,” he added.
The meeting also included important discussions revolving around CCTV cameras on Highways 410 and 403 to tackle gun crime and the shortage of judicial resources at the Provincial Offences Act (POA) courthouse in Brampton.
The Mayor asked that Council and City Officials receive regular updates from the Federal Government on the City’s federal priorities, current budget requests, and upcoming opportunities to access new funding.
“We also look forward to continued support from both levels of government to build our community through the creation of business opportunities, post-secondary education, effective health care and affordability for all,” said Mayor Patrick Brown.
Some highlights from the pre-budget submissions included immediate, equitable health care funding to end “hallway medicine” in Brampton, expand Phase II of Peel Memorial Centre, and fund a third hospital in Brampton.
