Dec. 31 weather: Over 10 cm of snow possible on New Year's Day in southern Ontario

It will be a snowy start to 2025 with flurries in the forecast for Mississauga and Toronto while some parts of southern Ontario could see between 5 to 10 cm of snowfall on New Year’s Day.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is calling for snow across much of the province on Jan. 1, with flakes starting to fall in the early morning hours in the Greater Toronto Area like Mississauga, Brampton and Hamilton.

Around 2 cm are expected in urban areas with snow ending near noon before cloudy skies bring a 60 percent chance of flurries to the GTA in the afternoon.

New Year’s Day will also bring a northwest wind blowing around 30 km/h gusting up to 50 km/h in Mississauga with a daytime high of 2 C.

But a system expected to move through the province could bring between 10 to 20 cm of snow to some areas, according to Instant Weather.

More snow is likely to be in central and eastern Ontario, with around 10 to 15 cm in areas north of the GTA, according to Environment Canada.

The Ottawa area is expected to see between 5 to 10 cm on Wednesday, as are Bruce Peninsula, Tobermory, Listowel, Stratford, Goderich and elsewhere in Ontario.

Overnight conditions will see mainly cloudy skies with 60 percent chance of flurries in Mississauga and a low of -2 C that will feel more like -8 C with the wind chill.

There is a chance of snow for each day this week in the GTA and Environment Canada says snow squalls are expected on Thursday for communities near Georgian Bay, Lake Superior and east of Lake Huron, according to Environment Canada.
