Work has begun on the city’s latest cricket project, teaming up with Peel School Board to bring a fully lit pitch with artificial turf to a Brampton high school available for community use.

Crews broke ground on the new cricket pitch coming to Brampton’s Turner Fenton Secondary School this week, which once completed will be available for use by both the students at Turner Fenton as well as the members of the public.

The new cricket facility will feature artificial turf wickets and player pavilions, as well as floodlights for evening practice and play.

The pitch will be Brampton’s first joint-use cricket project, with the City planning on giving priority access and opportunities to rent the pitch to community sports groups outside of school hours.

“We have heard from residents that there is a need for more space to play cricket as it is the fastest growing sport in our community,” Coun. Rowena Santos said in a statement. “We are committed to providing residents with more access to spaces that are equipped for Cricket, and the new Turner Fenton Cricket Pitch provides just that.”

Brampton City Council is on a mission to make Brampton the cricket capital of Canada with several new and upcoming projects including Brampton’s first dedicated tape ball pitch, a four-lane batting cage at the Kwality Sweets Cricket Pitch, another four batting cages at the Save Max Sports Centre, and shade shelters at various pitches across the city provide some relief during the summer months.

The City is also accepting expressions of interest to develop the CAA Centre and City Lands site into a multi-use cricket stadium, retail and entertainment hub.

“Sports are an integral part of healthy and active communities that enable and nurture talent, teamwork and the celebration of a shared passion,” the city said in a release. “The City is committed to increasing access to spaces and programming across Brampton for residents.”
