The council continues to pursue options for the establishment of a university in Brampton.

On Thursday, September 26, Brampton’s council discussed seeking solutions to increased postsecondary education offerings in Brampton.

City staff will explore options for establishing a Brampton University, including the following:

  • Public-private partnerships to develop, build and maintain buildings that would house a Brampton University and potential student housing.
  • Advocacy efforts at the Provincial and Federal levels of government to obtain support for a Brampton University.
  • Establish a business case and programming possibilities that reflect the demands of current and future employers.

The council states that the city remains committed to building long-term relationships with existing postsecondary partners, including Ryerson University, Algoma University and Sheridan College.

Council states that the progress on these relationships has led to many successes, including:

  • Establishment of Chang School for Continuing Education courses in City Hall’s West Tower
  • Announcement of the Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst – to operate out of City Hall
  • Continued expansion of Algoma University’s physical footprint and program offering in downtown Brampton
  • Working towards an agreement with Ryerson University for collaboration in the City’s co-working/incubator space downtown

“The Province is prepared to listen and support new postsecondary models that are accountable, prioritize students, and focus on training for jobs that employers need filled,” said Mayor Patrick Brown. “We will work with all qualified parties to bring more postsecondary options to Brampton that meet the needs of our residents, students, businesses and community, helping to create a City of Opportunities.”
