Shoppers at an Ontario Costco were reportedly targeted for pickpockets last week.
A user on Reddit said that their mother was shopping at a Costco located near Highway 400 and Highway 7 when she had her phone taken from out of her jacket.
The post alleges that multiple other people were also victimized within a short time period.
York Regional Police told INsauga.com that they have a report of a cellphone that was stolen while a customer was shopping at the store.
Const. James Dickson said it’s currently under investigation, adding it’s not yet known if it was a pickpocketing incident or a distraction theft.
“It’s an online report from Dec. 13, and the theft occurred between 5:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m.,” Dickson said.
He also provided some advice for shoppers.
“We would always encourage everyone to make sure that they secure their items and to never leave items like purses or jackets in shopping carts,” he said.
“We also encourage everyone to ensure that they have tracking enabled for their devices as this greatly assists investigators in collecting evidence of offences.”
Though police currently have just one report of a theft, Dickson said other reports could come in.
He also said that anyone who has been a victim of a crime should report.
