Road Safety officers with Peel Regional Police are out in full force on the streets of Mississauga and Brampton today (May 31) looking for unsafe tractor trailers and other commercial vehicles not fit for driving.

In an update via social media, Peel police report that so far in their latest truck safety blitz, no vehicles have been taken off the road due to mechanical or other defects.

“We are out with (Road Safety officers) who are doing commercial vehicle enforcement,” Peel police said on Twitter. “Specially trained officers are conducting level one inspections, which include checking under the vehicle.”

Police in Peel, and across the country, also paid extra attention to unsafe trucks recently during Canada Road Safety Week 2023, which ran May 16 to 22.

At least one transport truck driver who rolled along Hwy. 401 near Mississauga in early March could’ve used some safety tips at that time.

The trucker had video footage taken from behind of his large cab and trailer moving at highway speed on Hwy. 401 with one of the two trailer doors flung wide open.

Peel police operate several truck inspection safety blitzes throughout the year in Mississauga and Brampton in an effort to spread the safety message and penalize offenders.

In some cases, when necessary, cops take the trucks off the road.

Peel police who take part in the commercial vehicle safety blitzes are trained to identify mechanical and other issues with trucks that could pose a threat to the vehicle itself as well as other drivers on the road.

At last count, Peel police had a team of 12 to 14 Road Safety officers who are trained and certified to inspect trucks for safety issues.

Team members look for any issues with things such as steering, brakes and tires, the body and frame of the truck, suspensions, load security and they also do a visual inspection underneath.
