Work is set to begin on a new public school that once finished will welcome some 650 Peel students in Caledon.

Crews will break ground on the new Caledon East Public School next Thursday, a facility that the Peel District School Board says “marks a significant milestone for the growing community.”

The new $32.4 million school will serve around 650 students and includes plans for a childcare centre with 73 licensed spaces and six kindergarten rooms.

The existing Caledon East Public School was built in 1971 and “no longer meets local needs,” the board says. It was expanded in 1988 to accommodate 254 students.

Construction of the new school will be on the same site as the old one. The work will officially begin with a groundbreaking ceremony next week, and staff and students will stay in the current facility until the new school is finished.

Demolition of the existing school and completion of the new one are scheduled for the summer 2026, the board says.
