A grocery store in Mississauga shut its doors for good this week, but a new one will eventually take its place.

The Sobeys location at 5602 Tenth Line West, near Thomas Street in Erin Mills, closed on Wednesday, Aug. 28, Sobeys spokesperson Manasvi Thakur told INsauga.com in an emailed statement.

Thakur said that the location is converting to a Chalo FreshCo, expected to open in the Spring of 2025.

Sobeys owns FreshCo stores, as well as Chalo FreshCo locations.

The Chalo stores differ from conventional FreshCo spots in that they offer “a vast selection of everyday staples and an assortment of South Asian groceries,” according to its website, and also has foods from other parts of the world.

Chalo means “let’s go” in Hindi.

The website indicates there are 13 Chalo FreshCo stores in Canada, seven of which are in Ontario (five in Brampton, one in Malton and one in Scarborough).

“The decision to close a store is not taken lightly,” Thakur said.

“There are several factors that are taken into consideration when making the decision to convert a store. We remain committed to evolving and strengthening our business in this highly competitive grocery market while adapting to the growing needs of our communities.

“This conversion provides an opportunity for the business to better serve the demands of the Mississauga community.”

Thakur said the company is “working closely” with employees who have been impacted by the closure and “will support all employees who are transitioning to new locations and career opportunities in the community.”

It’s not clear how many people may have lost their jobs.

The Sobeys stores nearest to the former location on Tenth Line are on Bronte Street South in Milton, Upper Middle Road West in Oakville, and Maple Grove Drive in Oakville.
