The busiest intersection in Mississauga will close this weekend.
The intersection of Burnhamthorpe Road and Hurontario Street will be temporarily closed starting Friday, May 26 at 7 p.m., according to a press release from Metrolinx.
The intersection will remain closed for the weekend, re-opening on Monday, May 29 at 6 a.m.
Traffic will be diverted with detour signage. Detour routes include Robert Speck Parkway, Kariya Drive, Confederation Parkway, City Centre Drive, Elm Drive, Arista Way and Central Parkway.
MiWay route 2, 26, and 103, as well as GO Transit’s route 21C will be temporarily detoured.
Access to businesses will remain open.
This closure is crucial for the construction of the future Hazel McCallion Line, according to Metrolinx. Crews will be installing and upgrading electrical and storm utility infrastructure.
Storm sewer work is happening on the west side of the intersection, including the installation of concrete pipes.
Alectra electrical infrastructure is being installed on the south side of the intersection.
And crews will work straight through the weekend.
“This approach will reduce impacts for drivers and the community to just 59 hours, instead of intermittent closures that could have lasted 18 weeks,” Metrolinx notes.
The installation of upgraded watermains, storm and sanitary sewers continues to progress steadily along Hurontario Street as part of Hazel McCallion Line construction, Metrolinx says.
The Metrolinx Peel Community Engagement team is hosting a pop-up at Square One Shopping Centre today (May 24) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to speak with community members about the upcoming closure.
